MILKCHECK
AFLATOXIN
Climate change is widely reported as a driving factor for increasing concerns of food safety. It is expected to have impact e.g. on the presence of mycotoxins (Aflatoxin M1 in milk) in food, with high toxicity. In the past decade Aflatoxin M1 contamination occurred in increasing number in raw milk, threatening dairy farmers’ livestock and more importantly dairy food safety and it is a matter of concern that require actions. As for now, analysis of Aflatoxin M1 is not included in raw milk testing laboratory protocols. Consumers must be ensured that they buy safe food that is controlled by national authorities.
Former research results show, that adult population is not exposed to high levels of AFM1, but regular monitoring of Aflatoxins is necessary not only for dairy farmers but also for the milk processing sector.
