MILKCHECK
PROTOTHECA
Climate change is often quoted for the rising number of Prototheca infection cases in CEE countries that can only be detected from raw milk and as no treatment currently exists for Prototheca spp. mastitis, infected cows are eliminated from the herd causing economic loss to farmers. In the past decade Prototheca infection cases occurred in increasing number in raw milk, threatening dairy farmers’ livestock and more importantly dairy food safety and it is a matter of concern that require actions. As for now, analysis of Prothoteca is not included in raw milk testing laboratory protocols.
